Well but it don't work like that.
Players do not want to be shorted what they're worth. Anymore than you or I do. When I did yardwork as a kid I wouldn't take 10 dollars for 50 dollar job just because "it's more than zero." The job costs 50 dollars. I also wouldn't settle for 30. And so on.
So the fact that Donald is on a rookie contract that seriously underpays him in relation to his value as a player does not mean he should settle for being underpaid in a new contract.
Look at JJ Watt. He signed as a rookie for 2.8 M a year. He did a third year re-negotiation just like Donald did last year and it went to 16.6 M in 2014, which yes is more than some starting qbs were getting at the time.
