He will have the lowest jersey sales per dollar salary in the history of the NFL by a wide margin.
Usually when you get a guy making record breaking salary numbers he’s also a marketing draw as well. Not Donald.
I remember when Faulk held out of camp in 99 while the Rams completed his new contract. There was a lot of dumping on the player then, too. People questioned his character and even his talent. Not all of us fall for that stuff though.
Here's what's actually happening in this case.
2nd contracts go up. Last year WR was around 14 M, this year it was around 16 M. In 2017 Carr signed for 25 M, in 2108 Cousins signed for 28 M. That's around 12-14% a year.
Donald's category is best defensive player, set by Von Miller in 2016 at 19 M. 21 M in 2018 would be a 10% increase across 3 years.
What has people thinking that this would be the only position that sees a 10% increase in 3 years? The increase if normal ought to take the amount to AT LEAST 24 M or so.
Yet people are convinced for some reason that this is this huge, big offer...and it doesn't even keep pace with something like Cousins getting more than Wilson because of the years they each came up?
I've seen it so many times before I am actually kind of thick skinned about it. The player's "demands" are perfectly reasonable, but some fans act instead like he slapped their grandparents around with a dead racoon.

ZN, so when comparing salary increases by position, why do you discuss % increases and provide figures for QB/QB and WR/WR, but when discussing Donald you mention 3-4 OLB like Von Miller.
Last time I checked Donald is a DT, and the highest paid DT is Fletcher Cox earning $17.9MM in 2018. If Donald was offered $21MM in 2018 that increase is north of 17%.
I also think you can't compare skill positions like WR and QB to DT.
In today's game DT are not as valuable as skill position players.
Centers in todays NBA don't make and shouldn't make the same money as Wings like LeBron, Harden, Steph etc.
My position is that $21MM would be a fair offer based on his position. If you factor in the fact that he is a genrational player maybe he deserves a bump yo $22-23M, but to be asking for $25M+, $6-7M more than the highest paid DT in the NFL is greed.
Because, and the Rams back this, his category is not DT. As I directly said his category is top defender in the league. That is how the Rams talk about paying him. If you don't like him being measured as a top DEFENDER in the league then take that up with the Rams because they made it clear all along that's how they were talking about him and how they were defining the deal.
The DT group is not in his class and those are older deals (2016 and 2017). In fact there hasn't been an elite DT of AD's class in the league since Sapp retired in 2007.
So the market for top defender is set by Von Miller at 19 M 3 contract years ago in 2016.
A similar logic was used with Gurley, where the top contract (not tag) at RB is 8 M. The argument is, Gurley is more than a back and should be paid as more than a back. He's an elite, 230 lb runner and receiver. That is the logic behind giving him nearly 7 M more than the nearest RB contract. Did you object to Gurley's contract? Because it's the exact same kind of thing.
So...it's similar thing with AD. His deal is not for a DT classed with other DTs, it's as the top defender in the league, and that is something which I have consistently (and very openly) stressed all along, going back a long time.
Do the math on that. There is no other position that just goes up 10% across 3 years. It's more like 12-14% annually. Given that you measure it against Von MIller and the increase ought to be to
AT LEAST 24/25 M.
