You pay him as top defender, that is a given, but you don't use the positional increases for skill positions for inflation purposes.
DT are simply not as important in the grand scheme of things on a NFL team as skill positions.
I would argue that an elite edge rusher like Von Miller or Mack has more value than a DT.
Not to mention, as many have argued before, Von led a defense, won playoff games and a SB.
Donald has not even led a top 5 defense. Hell, when his linemate Mike Brockers went down he and his colleagues got run over by the Falcons.
Von did nothing on his own. I never buy the "this player is responsible for a superbowl" stuff because it's just plain unrealistic. Heck if the greatness of single players won superbowls then both Fouts and Marino would have rings. Von Miller needed to be on a good defense with a competent offense to win, and saying anything else just gets too far off the reality page for me.
Why not use positional increases to discuss how contracts go up? EVERY position goes up 12-14% a year and there is nothing that exempts any position from that. It would be arbitrary to do it like that
It's not inflation purposes btw...the positional values on second contracts go up every year because the CAP goes up.
I can link you to the best article on Donald which points out that in this era, with the stress on the quick short passing game, the value of interior rushers has gone way up. That article is based on the writer talking to several league people, coaches and GMs. In fact that is completely borne out by the Rams production last year. How did they end up 4th in sacks and 4th in sack percentage while their edge rushers were a subpar Quinn, and over the hill Barwin, a rookie Ebukam, and an effort guy who got hurt in Longacre? It's because Wade knows how to set things up with AD.
If you have an elite DT you can add an edge rusher, since rushers are by far easier to find that elite DTs. Then...you have both.
The article I refer to estimates that Donald by himself accounts for 2 more wins above expectations a year.
