It’s called what the market will bear, and no one knows if the market will bear $25M at this time. Not even you, no matter how much you push your position.
If Donald signs for less than $25M, as I expect he will. That’s what the market will bear, not $25M.
The fact is, it's a valid opinion. I am glad you're admitting that because what I was responding to was your opinion that asking for 25 M in this negotiation is outrageous and something to condemn.
And I did not say that he would sign for 25 M. I have been saying that I expect it to be 23/24 M.
The point you're missing here is that ASKING for 25 M is not outrageous at all given the market. You were being very adamant that that was way too much to ask for when it's not.
It is also the case that given the market circumstances 21 M is LOW.
You want the reasoning on that, or are you completely set in your stance? Goes like this. 2nd contracts go up every year. The rate of increase is usually above 10%, and more like 12-14% a year (it;s not "fixed" but those are the parameters). And old contracts are precisely that, old. So the nearest contract we have for someone paid as the best defender in the league is Von Miller who signed for 19 M 3 contract years ago. Going from 19 M to 21 M after 3 years is a rate of increase of around 10% across 3 years or about 3.3% a year. NO ONE HAS SEEN INCREASES THAT LOW ACROSS THREE YEARS. If you go by the standard 12-14% a year then a MINIMAL expectation would be around 23/24 M and 25 M is just simply not "too much."
Mack isn't going to settle for 21 M either because the same market logic applies.
You may not personally LIKE him asking for 25 M but under the circumstances it IS completely reasonable.
And no one just lets the "free market" decide deals. It was known this year for example that 2nd contracts for WRs were going to be around 16 M. Landry, Evans, Watkins, and Cooks all got around that much. It's easy to follow this and it's kind of like clockwork.
The same logic says you do not hope for a mere 10% increase across 3 years in relation to Von Miller's deal from 2016.
The same team that jumped ahead of the curve with Gurley and paid him almost twice as much as the nearest RB contract (contract, not tag) should know that. You would think.
