Here;s what your draft neglects IMO.
The Rams offensive LINE is NOT young and developing. It's old and about to hit contract hell.
AW is 36 and at the end of 2018 he will be 37. He's already declining. We don;t know if he will make it to the end of his contract (which is after 2019). Sullivan is in a similar position. They have no one behind Sullivan to be the next center.
After 2018, 3 Rams OL hit free agency -- Saffold, Brown, and Hav. They won't be able to sign all of them. They might only be able to sign 1 of them...if any.
So after 2018, they COULD face having to replace Whitworth, Saffold, Sullivan, Brown, and Hav. You can't count on 2019 free agency and the 2019 draft to replace all 5. In fact you can count on 2019 draft picks/free agency to replace 4 of them. Or even 3 of them. 2 of them, in fact, is still asking a lot.
PLUS in 2017 they were just plain lucky to go all year without a single significant OL injury. The odds are against that happening again.
I get out of all that that OL is actually a draft priority in 2018.
The defense has major pieces in place and you can add to it a bit at a time.
The OL is a year away from significant issues. You can't go into that year unprepared.
PLUS, there's this factor. Good LOTs usually don't hit free agency, AND the hit percentage on drafting LOTs after the 1st and 2nd round is abysmal. That means that as a rule, if you want a left OT, you have to use the 1st or 2nd round. Do you do that this year or next year? Problem with waiting until next year is that there just might not be anyone AND you are closer to actually NEEDING someone. That's a bad combo.
If it were me, and a solid LOT prospect were there at pick 23, I would take him. He may not play LOT immediately but then you will need OL after 2018 anyway, so IF AW lasts through 2019 (and that's a big if) you plug your 2018 1st round LOT into another spot. Cause they WILL need players.
