The thing is, the Rams will have first bite of the apple to keep Dotson. We already know he is really good and that he fits well and he now knows the playbook.
But, we don't know which Edges and CBs might be available, what they will command, will they continue to perform well in a different system and environment, and which team they would prefer to join.
The positive is that the Rams are an admired team, not too far from what New England used to be, and so they are attractive to FAs.
The negative is that it is now being openly said that the cost to live in California, and the enormous taxation significantly reduces the overall value of a contract (this reality became highly publicized with the Ohani deal that defers almost all his money until after he retires, one reason being that he can move to state like Florida with zero State income tax when he receives about 90% of his contract payout).
Sometimes a bird in the hand...or at least almost in the hand... shouldn't be overlooked. The odds that the Rams could find some much cheaper choice to instantly fill that hole Dotson would leave are quite small. We're finally giving Stafford good protection and we're seeing the results.
So is an Edge or a CB more valuable than a terrific All-Pro level OG? Not so sure any longer. But, between an Edge and a CB I'll take Edge every time. Cutting down the time a QB can stay in the pocket aids the secondary tremendously.
