Kinda sounds like Lin-Manuel Miranda's two movies that came out recently "Tick, Tick, Boom" and "In the Heights".
Not sure how much of the dismal box office results for these movies are due to the pandemic and how much is a result of them just not appealing to a broader audience. It's probably a little of both. Two of those are musicals. After the wild success of Hamilton, maybe Spielberg and Miranda both thought musicals on the big screen were what people wanted. Apparently... not. I watch movies on Cable and the internet so it doesn't much matter to me. I just like watching quality stuff.
