The difference, to me, was the change in the lineup, primarily the addition of Von Miller.
My question (and I say this at the expense of being called "a hater" "Ignorant" or "a poo-poo head"
how smart a coordinator do you need to be when handed AD, Miller and Ramsey? Not saying I could do it, and not intended as a slight on Morris, Staley or Phillips. However, better tools do make a job easier.
Fair question: How good a DC was Ray Malavasi? Bud Carson? evne Frtiz SHurmur
Bud Carson came to the Steelers in 1972, I think. He had LC Greenwood, Andy Russell, Joe Greene, Dwight White, Jack Ham, Mel Blount,
How good could he have been?
Carson also came to Rams in 1997, left after the defense was taught. Had Kevin Carter, D.Marco Farr, Todd Lyght, Lyle,
How hard was it for Carson and then Guinta and Bunting to coach that 1999 Rams team?
Marvin Lewis inherited Ray Lewis, and several of those guys in Baltimore...
I can also point to examples of poor defenses with great players..
Point is, okay, maybe it's not that hard to coach Ramsey, Donald (which is just two guys) rest of team at midseason was solid, not great players. Does 2 players make it "easy"?
Other point is no matter what a fair person thinks about Morris----no fair person could think of firing Morris at mid-season. It was (if you don't like 'silly" STUPID.
And bullsh1t.
I posted the stats from mid-season on and defense never significantly improved through week 17. In the playoffs it was a dominant defense
thought ALL 17 games the defense was a good one, but not great. Not dominant. But not a firable defense. But there was not some great jump from 17 to 9th or something,
What happened is the offense tanked in Novemebr and gave up 40-50 points . . . and skewed the numbers.
But points allowed by defense was always around 19-20 all year,
So, while you asked a good question, and I know know the answer, what is a fact is the defense was much batter than the haters said it was.
