Rambro I agree with all of your points and that is why I thought firing would have been too drastic. I was very disappointed that we weren't at the defense level prior but adjustments take time.
When a company brings in a new manager it often takes easily a year for him and his dept. to get in sync. I told my new employees that it would take them two years to learn the system and become reliable and productive.
I see two components of this argument: #1) People were wrong about calling for his firing, #2) the extent of defensive changes Morris made. Only Morris, or perhaps also McVay can answer #2.
My worry now is that he's going to be poached by some (bad word here) NFL team that needs a new HC.
Yeah...like everyone else, I want our defense to be able to pitch shut-outs from the beginning to the end of a season. But again, given those three challenges I laid out, I didn't think it practical to assume that there weren't going to be some rough patches. And just to be clear...we were never a HORRIBLE defense to begin with.
The other thing that needs to be discussed is that a unit is only as good as its weakest link. And you repeatedly saw OC's doing EVERYTHING they could to expose certain Ram defensive players. And what made things worse was that the organization put Morris in that situation (by making some WTH trades mid-season) and forcing him to play those limited players EVERY SINGLE DEFENSIVE SNAP.
He (Morris) had his fair share of challenges to overcome. Fortunately for him, our offense gave the defense plenty of time to work out the kinks.
