I appreciate what you're saying and certainly, they seem to be attempting to fix several really bad decisions.
I do not share most people's thought that Goff was a lost cause and Stafford is light years better, but I'll leave that alone. There seems to be an all out gambler attitude toward everything, not just personnel.
Things I Would Do Different:
I would require McVay to develop his high priced QB, not micromanage him on every play, then become frustrated and launch him.
I would try to keep players that have been developed here: John Johnson, Troy Hill
I would actually use the TE we just gave an extension
I would emphasize depth on the roster
I'd consider keeping Brandin Cooks (obviously missed him) and they had just paid him
There isn't anything 'cool' about paying and dumping players within a season of paying them big money. That is more an indictment on the coaching staff and GM. I'm not sure how people don't see that.....pay a guy, decide you don't like him, dump him.....over and over? Talib, Peters, Watkins, Cooks, Goff, Gurley, Matthews, Fowler.....This isn't all 'oopsies'...... it's not hard to see that much of this is a frenetic, hyper mind(s) paying and regretting.....
They can't keep doing this....the banker will come to collect. And it may be this offseason.....Snead himself saying he is going to beg for restructures or the cuts will begin.
Where to start, 49?
Don’t know about ‘light year’s better’, but most everyone feels that Stafford has a significantly higher ceiling than Goff. If Rams are in a ‘win-now’ SB window and a QB like Stafford hits the market, why WOULD’T the Rams pounce?
As to ‘develop his high priced QB’? WTH do you think he was trying to do for the last 41 games? And McVay is known for being an O mind and an excellent QB developer. Translation: McVay ain’t no Jeff Fisher.
Keeping players that are developed here like JJ and Troy Hill? Ummm, there’s this thing called the cap... BTW, better get used to losing quality players through FA due to cap ceiling. Happens to good drafting teams every year.
I, too, would like to see more targets for our TE’s. Stafford will likely correct that immediately.
What does ‘emphasize depth on roster’ even mean?
Keeping Mr 4-5 concussion Brandin Cooks was never a realistic option. C’mon...
Acquiring then moving on from Talib, Peters, Watkins, Cooks, Gurley, Goff, Matthews, and Fowler? Are you kidding me? In all those cases Rams either upgraded, offloaded injured and non-productive players, players not producing relative to their contract, or an expired contract where player could get a FA salary far beyond Rams budget. You know this. So why excoriate Rams for taking most logical (sometimes only) course of action?
I’ll take the aggressive FO that’s always thinking in terms of win-now every single time over the previous Ram regimes that literally set an NFL record for futility. If I’m going down, I want to do so with both my six-guns blazing.
