My guess: they anticipated continued improvement and that improvement never came.

You give a third year player a big contract not only for what he has accomplished, but for what you expect him to become over the course of that contract. The trade tells me that Snead/McVay didn't think Goff was giving them what they anticipated getting from him.

IOW they projected a growth path, paid Goff accordingly, didn't see the growth, moved on.

My view: it's not that simple.

None of this, for example--as usual--factors in the OL collapse of 2019. It's as if that is just a taboo topic.

And there were numerous issues in 2020. The qb is just an easy target.

What I worry about is that if a lot of possible issues turn out to be real. Like, is McVay a control freak who tries to fit players into square holes and in the process throws their games off. If he is--then, that problem will show up again elsewhere. Stafford won't fix it.

What I keep reacting to is all these assumptions. Like first, that a young qb is "there" after 5 years when we have regularly seen that qbs, particularly pocket passers, are simply not always "there" in year 5. Let's look at Stafford. How many bad games did he have his 5th year? Well in 2013, a bad game is probably a qb rating of 70 or less. By that count he had--drum roll--4 (hey same as Goff in 2020). In those 4 games he had 9 INTs and 4 TDs.

Irritable impatience works sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't.

Another is, Rams lack of scoring is not on the qb. The numbers show Goff was good in the RZ. The numbers also show that the Rams as a whole weren't. So did changing qbs change that?

And either way, the "anticipated improvement" argument doesn't really respond to the issue. If there were serious deficiencies in Goff's game at the skill level, that has nothing to do with improvment. If you can't process quickly, you don't LEARN to do that, you just can't do it. So if the idea is that Goff doesn't process quickly, he didn't before the contract either and it would be bad policy to assume that he could improve in THAT area.

And btw don't get me wrong, I am open to Stafford and seeing what he's about and what he can do in this offense. I look forward to it. I don't have a problem with the trade. What I have a problem with is weak analysis. I will have the same problem with that if it shows up in discussions of Stafford, too.

Will see how well Goff does in Detroit. I guarantee he will crash and burn worse in detroit than he did in 2019, 2020 with the Rams. Detroit is an abyss of hell for any player. I guarantee also that Stafford will out play Goff of 2019, 2020 and will have one of his best years. Im not the happiest with the terms of the trade but we will see a marked improvement from the qb position.
