"McVay’s decision to speak critically in public about Goff for the first time wasn’t just a sign of things to come, but also seemed to serve as a message to his locker room, where some frustration rippled during the latter half of the season — the message being that an underperforming player would not be coddled, regardless of that player’s status."
I asked her what she meant by this "frustration" and what it was based upon.
Does it not seem odd that the locker room was pretty muted in its support of Goff. Sure there were some comments that the players were fired up to see Goff take the field with his thumb after Wolford went down but I wonder if this is McVay sensing frustration within his team about Goff's play. I mean his comments and behavior don't make a lot of sense for someone who is so calculating but frustration within the locker room could shed some light on this.
If Rodrigue answers my question about what she was referring to in the above quote, I will post it.
I don't see McVay as calculating.
And--there were several games this year where the team showed up without the energy to play a lesser opponent. The most vivid example is the Jets. That was as much the defense as anything else.
So if someone is trying to invent the narrative that only one player lacked the consistent motivation, they're kind of whitewashing that.
It's an issue a McVay has to address it going forward. I thought the fact that it happened at all reflected poorly on his overall leadership. It was a negative in his overall assessment. That's not supposed to happen and I hate it when it does.
If it continues, even for a 2-3 games like it did in 2020, it will not do their new qb any favors.
