many have been offered, but I think there are a few left to put on the table:
1. Goff's greatest strength is also killing McVay: Goff is know for being even, calm, and never rattled. He is known for having a short term memory and shakes off a pick instantly. This is great, but has it gotten old? Does McVay want Goff to be pissed when he throws a pick, two , three? McVay is a competitor and Goff is a solid winner who seems to be a natural politician ("the thumb is no excuse blah blah"
. Perhaps, McVay is tired of not having any fire at the helm.
1. In the past McVay complimented Goff keeping him more in-control. Nothing lately.2. the inability to stack. Goff came in and was not used to reading defenses. He learned and is doing it now. But it seems when he learns something he forgets what he just learned, or he is unable to put it all together. So read defense at the cost of downfield throws? stop turnovers? done, but at the cost of taking sacks? it seems whenever you solve one problem it creates a new one. Perhaps McVay has determined this is it, great guy, can do it all, just not all at once.
2. Over coaching? Maybe. There is a lot happening and few are great at processing it all. Even Aaron Rodgers can't see it all at the snap, but his ability to move around while he looks is the difference. Mobility can help and McVay knows this.3. play calling: seems to me Goff audibles a lot. I do not know if they send in two plays or three or how the audible system works, but in the event that McVay is sending in plays and Goff is constantly overruling them could mean there is a sort of power struggle going on. It is clear that both would have plenty of ammo to point out the other's failed calls and justification for using their own, but this type of tug-o-war is not good.
4. McVay cannot relate with the kid. McVay talks about life - work balance and spending more time with his GF etc, but the dude loves football, breathes football, this is why he loves AD so much, AD is in that camp as well. Being a former QB himself, McVay maybe cannot understand how a QB cannot be as infatuated with the game as he is, and to have Goff spend time traveling around or taking off time from football all together might irk McVay.
4.McVay was a WR. Maybe this is why he doesn't relate to the QB position? WR only has know his route and maybe other WRs.5. Goff can be pretty ditzy as we have seen in interviews etc. Perhaps he is just not smart enough to be an NFL QB, he has elite skills but not an elite mind or passion. I think by choosing Wolford, he went with the elite mind and passion over skill.
5. I think Goff is smart enough and at least at one time was passionate about it. Wouldn't have won so many game if he was just lucky. Not sure if his passion has changed with age, money, girlfriend...I lastly want to say, McVay making this public is not good for all the reasons stated here, but also it is horrible for any trade deals we might want to make. The price has gone down now that it seems McVay does not want him. That is really bad negotiating to say the least.
