I hear what your saying, getting good rookies on cheap contracts is great for building a team but the trades have helped to get us where we are now
I am not talking about trades though.
I am talking about trades using high picks for young players who are well into their rookie contracts. It means you either have to pay them soon OR you ended up with a rental. Case in point: 21+ M of the 2019 cap goes to 2 players who are on one years--Fowler and Peters. That COULD mean (dunno yet) that in 2020, they will have spent several high picks on young players and only one of them (Cooks) is on the roster.
And I might add both Fowler and Peters were available for trades because like a LOT of players on rookie contracts who get traded, they had issues. Teams as a rule don't trade productive young rookie contract players UNLESS they have issues. So these guys come with risks too.
I think it's a strategy with problems which is probably why we will not see them do it again for a long while if ever. I can safely say I doubt they will do 4 in 2 years ever again.
I would rather have had a corner they drafted in 2018 than Peters, frankly. Not to the point of giving the Rams a low grade for team-building. But it's a thing I think about when I add up all that they did in terms of team-building. Some places they score high (free agency). But this particular tactic (high picks for shorter rookie contracts) is much more iffy to me.
