Look, I can see both strategies working, especially when Snead/McVay are drafting so well. But a dramatic infusion of experienced talent was needed to jumpstart the Rams from 4-12 to 13-3. Couldn’t do all that with sticking strictly to the draft.
Now that we have an elite roster, a heavy draft with selected FA’s makes a ton of sense.
They had a ton of talent on hand. In 2018, basically they added Kupp, Johnson, Woods, and Whitworth. (Leaving Watkins out for a sec.) That's not a "dramatic infusion," that's just some good additions. They had enough talent on hand to win the division and the additions I listed helped. Second, I don't believe in jump-starting if it comes at a cost, and I think having a team in 2019 with 2 1-years taking up 21 M is something of a cost. And both will cost more than that to keep. Peters alone would be at least 15 M in 2019 money and more next year. So in the end I just don't believe that making
4 trades for short contract rookies is worth it. Draft a corner in 2018 and he plays 4 years for less than 1 M a year. I know their approach works because it's working. But there are just good reasons to prefer the more traditional longterm approach and I tend that way.
I liked the Talib trade.
