I see what you mean. But also sort of see it as "well, they traded picks to get Talib and Peters, so why couldn't they do that again in 2020?"
Hypothetically, if Talib retired and they lost Peters in free agency (2021 comp pick) they would have Robey-Coleman and Long coming in as two of their top 3 CBs. So either (a) sign someone else in free agency or (like with Weddle and Matthews this year) that gets released, (b) invest one of their top two 2020 draft selections on a CB, or (d) trade one of their (projected) four 3rd or 4th round picks for a CB.
Or some combination of above. I just don't think they have to worry about being over a barrel to re-sign Peters because they aren't. Maybe he loves LA and McVay and the culture so much that he won't try and bleed them for every last dollar. Who knows. But first and foremost he has to earn the $13-15M+/year, $65M+ contract and as of today to me he hasn't yet.
