I hear all the time, AD should not get qb money.
That's a confused concept.
The frontline of qb money is what a young starter gets in his second contract. Third and 4th contracts are much more up and down and dependent on circumstances. So the standard of measure should be what the market says qbs are worth in their 2nd contract--and that goes up by the year. Use anything else as a standard and it becomes too arbitrary.
Right now, starting qbs up for their 2nd contract are getting around 27-28 M. By the time Goff comes up it will be in the 30s.
Based on Suh's 2015 contract in Miami,. a top DT like AD would probably be getting around 23-4 M by now. We're not sure because there are not that many top level DTs of AD's caliber.
Right now btw Suh will be getting less than what he got from Miami because it's his 3rd contract. He's an older FA. That's why the 2nd contract is the standard for discussing this.
I know that reporters get confused on this, so they are not necessarily a resource. They buy the myth of "qb money" too. Well right now qb money is 27-28 M...measured by the gold standard, which is (as I said) the annually increasing amounts given to starting qbs up for their 2nd contracts.
That's becaus
e it makes absolutely no sense to say that a player up for his 2nd contract at another position cannot make what qbs up for their second contracts made a few years ago. It's just illogical. So for example, at WR, this year, Evans got 16+ M and Watkins got 16 M.
Can someone actually claim that because qbs a few years ago signed for 16 M in their 2nd contract, that Evans can't sign for that now?
Or because Wilson signed for 22 M in 2015, AD can't sign for that now?
Heck when Suh signed for 19 M in 2015 he already made more than several qbs at that pont, including at least one who had already signed a 2nd contract at that point. So just saying a top DT can't make what qbs up for 2nd contracts made a few years ago? Well that has ALREADY been violated. Or, actually, to put that in more directly logical terms, that has already been shown to be a false measure.
Short version: right now qb money is 27-28 M and no non-qb is going to get that this year. Non-qbs will be getting 27-28 M a few years from now when qb money is in the 30s.
