Since the 1970 merger, 220 receivers have caught at least 150 passes in their first four seasons. Austin has 181- tied for 142nd. He's 217th out of those 220 in YPC (9.1) and 219th in receiving yards. His 12 TD receptions are tied for 173rd.
We can talk about his role, versatility, big play ability and all that. But while he's not a bust he has very much underperformed.
I don't define Austin purely as a receiver and never did. That's going back to before he was drafted---my take on him then, in discussions before the draft, was that (1) I wanted him, and (2) you can't define him purely as a receiver because that's not what he is.
He's a hybrid who gets you yards and TDs a variety of ways.
In 2015 when they used him right he had as many carries as catches.
And he is one of a handful who has 3 or more TDs on returns across the last 3 years.
His value does not lie in catches alone.
That's always been my take on him.
