You make a compelling argument. I can definitely see TE over CB, but I'm not sold on WR.
As things stand ...
Nacua averages 92 catches a year as WR1.
The last 5 years Adams has caught 115, 123, 100, 103, and 85 passes as WR1. Can we expect him to catch 90 with the Rams?
It's not the production of these 2 that is my issue. One small issue is injury concerns.
The big issue for me. Opposing defenses have little concern for defending the deep field. They keep creeping up, which makes the middle to short zones well-defended. They need to make that secondary, and to some extent LB's fear that deep zone.
And Atwell is in line for 40ish.
For whatever reason, Atwell has been a non-factor...that I believe won't change.
If that SB window is open, why go with a proven non-productive WR
Would you expect a rookie WR to catch more than 40 balls and average more than 14 yards a catch? If not then why not just stick with Atwell?
First, any drafted player may be a bust; we all know that. Atwell was/is
Second, do the RAMS draft a TE, and does McVay/Stafford utilize them?
The RAMS draft Noel, Royals, or Higgins (SlotWR??) I would expect them to reach 40, but more importantly, they would open up the underneath for Nacua, Adams, and Higbee to do their thing.
McVay did comment on something to the effect, "We just can't just live in the short zones"
If you expect the guy to catch 60 then where are those other 20 catches going to come from? Do you want Nacua to drop to 82 and Adams to only catch 80? That's doable, but I'm not sure that makes the Rams' offense better.
I don't care about the number of catches. I want Stafford to have options as he makes his reads, or at the snap, he has a matchup that favors the RAMS. You know, have that defense in guessing mode. Looking like lost sheep
I'm totally on board with adding speed to the Rams offense. But I would add a TE with speed and give him 70 targets - the ones Parkinson, Davis, and Long got last year. And also add a RB with speed and give him 50 or 60 carries and throw him the ball 30 times (and take that load off of Williams).
Yep, speed is what they lack. The TEs are a whole other discussion. What kind of TE does McVay want? Is blocking an important skill to have? I think early on in the draft, we will get a good idea about what the RAMS are thinking about at TE
I would agree on a RB, but with limited picks, that gets pushed down, I think, to the late-round picks at best.
And then draft a WR later in the draft who can add a speed element next year after Atwell leaves in FA and if the guy develops into a legit WR2 then so much the better. If not, draft a WR2 next year.
I go back to this SB window open thought, if the time is NOW, then get the weapons that this RAMS O and Stafford need to put points on the board and complement a surprisingly good RAMS D
GO RAMS!!
