I agree with OldGoat,
"23-of-38 for 255 passing yards and a TD isn't "great" to me.”
Remember that was with an extra possession.
He was 19/32 for 205 through 4 quarters. Very few teams win with those QB numbers.
If every QB in the league was to QB the Niner’s offense (the only fair way to think about it), imo Purdy would be at best middle of the pack of the 32 starters. Yes, he will get better, but most of his success stems from their weapons, his underrated ability to run/scramble and Shanahan’s scheming. See Jimmy G's stats. If Purdy were on the Raiders his stats would be mediocre as well.
Most of his success comes from:
-first read schemed open receivers; easy passes/screens to Mc, Deebo, etc and yac; scrambles that lead to “wide open” receivers
There were several throws/completions throughout the game that would have changed the game, but Purdy was inaccurate. A better QB would have made the throws and Niners probably win - Stafford, Allen, Cousins, Herbert, Burrow, etc. It also seems, instead of standing in against pressure and making a big time throw, Purdy has been coached? to hurriedly throw the ball away and avoid sacks/getting drilled as he throws/turnovers. As opposed to other QBs who stand in for that extra 1/2 second, take shots, but make game winning throws because of it - Warner, Stafford, etc.
Like OldGoat kinda said, the league is lucky the Niners keep staying with QBs that are good enough to help their stacked rosters
win a lot of games, but not good enough to win it all.
Stafford on the Niners? They would have won the last 3 years. Purdy make the throws Stafford did on game winning 2021 Super Bowl drive? No chance.
Change QBs in this year’s Super Bowl and Niners win by 15.
