IMO the offense's biggest threat in the passing game is the guy they intend to throw the ball to.
You can certainly have a safety or an OLB or your CB3 covering the TE or RB ... but as I see it you're making it easier for the offense to hit their primary receiver when you do that since none of them can cover as well as your CB1.
To me it's all about maximizing your chances of stopping the play that's coming. And having your CB1 run 40 yds downfield with their WR1 while the QB completes a 6 yard pass to the TE for a first down doesn't seem all that effective. So you took the WR1 out of that play: to what end?
and the CBs and slot have rules...the CB can have the #1 receiver all over the field (MEG) or he can have him only going deep (MOD) if the WR fakes up and then goes inside the CB does not take him the slot (star) would and then has the #1 receiver.
And what Fangio's does is what you explain--puts best defenders on the best receivers who are the biggest threats most often. There is no slot plays this guy or CB plays that guy or linebacker plays this guys. It is not predetermined. It's all decided after the snap, after the routes declare. THat is what people need to understand. And I think you do
