I think we'd agree it's the character assets more than skill set that makes great backs consistent. You have to want those extra yards. You have to want that win when the ball is in your hands, and th opposig D is coming at you. You do it through determination, drive, ability to bear down in clutch moments, courage, commitment, fortitude.
That's where Akers' shortcoming lies. I hope he grows out of his obsessive preoccupation me-first Narcissism and into a deeper, more complete human being - and with it, a consistent football player.
Curtis Martin is the same height and played at 5 lbs. lighter than Cam Akers, but parlayed a similar skill set into the Hall of Fame. He worked harder at every asignment, every play, every practice, every rep.
Look at his highlights: Cam's running skills, the cuts, the jukes, the speed, are very similar; where Curtis Martin makes a big difference is at contact. The will, the determination, the drive, the wilingmness to hit harder and make those tough yeard is what Cam lacks - and it's not really a skill set issue.
Can Akers is not Curtis Martin, but he could be a comparable of player - if he wanted to be one bad enough.
