Play calls don't mean much when you can block for them.
Okay, let’s talk about run blocking for just a moment. Just to illustrate my point.
Three things.
Rams continued to start the hapless Evans at LG for weeks after both Skura and Aboushi were onboard AND had had 2 weeks to absorb the playbook. Irrational would be a kind description of that decision.
Second example was the Packer game. Temp was in the teens, patchwork OL, 3rd string QB that barely knew his teammates, facing a Packer D strong on pass D but weak on run D. Akers averaging 5.1 ypc, yet McVay only called 14 total run plays the whole game INCLUDING when outcome was very much in doubt. 12 for Akers and just 2 for Henderson. Instead, he chose to beat his head against a strong pass D in that weather with all the aforementioned handicaps. Bizarre.
Third example was McVay’s refusal to use 12 sets until much later in the season. 12 sets help a struggling OL and QB immensely yet McVay stubbornly kept calling 11 sets into defenses specifically designed to shut them down until very late in season.
I just gave you 3 glaring examples of decision making mistakes that could have helped an injured and constantly churning OL roster but in all 3 cases McVay inexplicably made wrong choices. Obviously wrong choices.
Rams ‘22 problems went FAR beyond the injuries. And I, for one, refuse to stick my head in the sand and pretend otherwise.
I’ll repeat myself. Something was ‘off’ with McVay in ‘22. Big Time. I hope it’s been fixed or we’re in for a disappointing’23.
