If I remember the correctly the Rams defense stats before weddle and miller were still better than Staley's.

There is a helluva lot more to evaluation of an overall D than just stats, RR.
Don't think that I could agree more 43.
I'm sure that, in addition to stats, professional coaching staffs consider several other items when determining who to play...and how to play them. Off the top of my head, those items might include:
- physical/mental attributes
- overall experience
- scheme familiarity
- tale of the tape (college, mini-camp, training camp, pre-season, in-week practice, and actual game)
- intangibles
Personally-speaking, I know that I'm only privvy to a PORTION of one of these items: live pre-season and actual games (I rarely re-watch games or focus on any particular player because I have NO IDEA what I'd be looking for).
So yeah. Though stats tell A story...they rarely tell the WHOLE story.
For that, you need to take all of these (and likely other) factors into account - of which only the coaches have unlimited access to.
