It's the age old story - you start with a conclusion - 'the rams D is too soft', or 'it seems like they never get off the field on 3rd down', or 'morris doesn't make adjustments' or whatever. Then when facts and evidence is presented to the contrary you completely discount it or say it's not important or doesn't match up to what your 'eyes saw'. Of course with humans - what you think you remembered seeing is not always what happened.
Thanks for that, promo.
Two things.
So, I should deny what I see with my own eyes?
Not necessarily - especially if they line up with other factors (like statistical facts). If they don't, then you have to start asking questions (and be prepared to acknowledge answers you might not expect.
Let me ask you a question: You've heard 53 list what appear to be very favorable stats put up by the defense this year. Let me pick one: Rushing defense where the Rams currently rank #4 in the league. Your eyes tell you that's not true. Fine.
What do your eyes tell you about the Charger's rush defense? Their HC is the de facto DC, right? And you like him, right? Would you prefer their ability to stop the run to the Rams?
Let me give you another stat: points allowed per game (I hear that's, somewhat, important to a team's overall success). The Rams are currently giving up 23.3 ppg. Not great, but I have to assume it's pretty bad to your eye, though, right?
What do your eyes tell you about how many ppg the Chargers give up? Their HC is the de facto DC, right? And you like him, right? Would you prefer Charger-like performance in that regard? Again, what are your eyes really telling you?

And secondly, isn’t ‘perception bias’ a 2-way street? Pretty sure it is.
I prefer to call it "confirmation bias," and it can definitely go both ways. But it doesn't have to be that way - especially if you know it exists. At that point, you've just made a decision to believe whatever you WANT to believe and are no longer someone that can have a rational discussion on almost any topic.
