Specific names aside, does anyone else think keeping 8 receivers on the final roster is a bit excessive? 8 being what I keep seeing predicted for our final roster.
I get that this is a passing league and that we use our receivers on special teams.
I'd just rather see us use one of those spots for more OL depth. Typically you don't see more than 3-4 receivers on the field on a given play, but you always play 5 OL.
But I guess that's just the way Sean rolls.
Below is a list of WR's remaining on the roster (as per therams.com).
I think the only way they keep 8 WR's is as follows...
I think if everyone was healthy (VJ obviously is not) the way I have it stacked for the top 3 is how McVay would like to start the season.1 - Kupp
2 - A Rob
3 - Jefferson
----------------
I have no idea in what order McVay sees the next 5 guys. But here's what I expect to start the season.4 - Skowronek
*He is going to be the primary 3rd receiver, until VJ comes back, because he is the most experienced of the bunch.
5 - Atwell
*Based upon the fact he hasn't played all pre-season, he's gonna make the team and I expect he may get 20% of the snaps whether as the number 3 in 11 personnel or as a 4th WR in certain sets.
6 - Powell
*He needs to be the KR & PR specialist. The guy changed the whole dynamic of both last year. That means he dressed every week that he's available. He's your last receiver in reality, but he's there every week so if others go down, you still have a body to take offensive snaps.
7 - McCutcheon
*Ya gotta think this kid is going to make the team. He's not going to clear waivers. How much and when he plays as a rookie WR, who knows. He's also going to have to shine on ST. I can see McCutcheon or Harris not dressing on certain weeks based upon what McVay's gameplan is.
8 - Harris
*I don't think the Rams want to give up on him or try to get him through waivers. I kind of get the feeling he's going to be that hybrid TE / WR guy who fills the role of the 3rd TE and WR (4-7) with a lot of ST snaps. Harris may split game day activation with McCutcheon.
----------------
Who is left?9 - Trammel
*Kid has shown well but there's no place for him on the 53 unless, heaven forbid, there's an injury prior to him being waived. I do think the rams would love to keep him on the practice squad. But, I think he'll get poaced by someone from McVay's coaching tree.
10 - W. Jackson
*Don't know much about this kid. He's REALLY BIG as I recall. PS, maybe?
So, there's 6 WR, 1 WR/TE and 1 Return Specialist/WR. If this is how they roll, what position do they have to let a guy go from? Personally, I think Perkins is a gonner. I love him and I don't want to see him go. But they can find a project #3 on the waiver wire who will be safe on the practice squad and if it ever becmes a need, the season is a gonner anyway.
