What you point out about Minshew is exactly why I can't see the jags wanting to get rid of him....yes they had the 1st pick of the draft and they chose their obvious QB for their building process. that said would you not want to have on hand a guy that's shown himself on your team to be there to assist Lawrence? You think that Minshew offers nothing to that process and a 6th rd. pick would fill his spot?
It's a 2 way street....it's not I want this guy I'll give you this and there you have it. Again I see nothing that Wolford has done to wring my hands in fear.....He seems to be right now what the RAMS have in the barn....he didn't show poorly when he played in a BIG game....he has mates around him...he's a drop off of a #1 QB, but he should be....he IMO is capable of taking over the team in a 1-2 game sequence....if it's more than that anyone would be screwed from that drop off.
You can't cover your primary spot with starting caliber backup QB's....it's rare and that's for a reason....
I am not saying that Minshew would not improve our backup spot....anytime you can get a guy who has started several games and done decent it would strengthen your team...but it's not fantasy ball....I see Wolford as a capable backup...in our position that to me is a good spot....I guess you see him as injury prone, and less than a guy who can lead the team for a short span......I don't see that.
You talk about circumstances....Wolford got hit in the head with IMO a late shot to the crest of his helmet....that's when he got hit...in the hawks game....in the playoff game.....he played the game before that put us into that game without injury issues. it wasn't pretty but again it was the game we needed...he over came a bad INT....we won ugly. IMO a backup is just supposed to give you a win, he did that....Now he has surgery on a non football issue...how is that a fault of his football play?...I don't see him as a injury waiting to happen.
I'm just basing it on what's been reported/rumored. If I were the Jags, I wouldn't get rid of him either but they supposedly will listen to offers because Meyer doesn't like him. I have no idea, it's just what I've heard.
When you add to that the fact that he's still on a rookie deal for 2 more years at only $1M/year, I find it downright negligent of the Rams to not make it happen. At least based on what we know on paper. McVay may hate Menshew for his system or his personality or any number of things that mean the Rams won't even pursue it. But I consider him a legitimate NFL starter and to have him as a backup/insurance makes it a no-brainer.
I'm a sucker for a great story and Wolford is easy to root for. But there's a reason guys like Warner, Garcia and Kitna stand out. They are rare and exceptions to the rule. It would be great if Wolford was another one of those guys and a hidden gem but when I remove sentiment from the equation, I don't feel real optimistic about him overall when it comes to winning games for the Rams if needed.
