I think that Jacob Harris is tough to project onto the football field, because he defies a standard NFL category. He's big and strong, like a tight end. He's long and fast, like a wide receiver.
I think I read an article from the Athletic that explained why Harris was grouped with the tight ends. Per analytics, he has a much better likelihood of success in the NFL from that position.
Per Jourdan Rodrigue from The Athletic: "McVay added that he plans to align Harris in a variety of positions along the line of scrimmage, which means he’ll be in less of the “traditional” tight end role and more of a mismatch option specifically in the passing game."
“Jacob Harris is a guy that’s definitely stood out. Just his overall speed and athleticism, you kind of feel him on the field. But that’s been in some of the limited, 7-on-7s and kind of running routes on air. That’s not how you really play football, so there is a real variance when you actually include the offensive and defensive lines. But just the overall athleticism and some of the things that he and Wes (Rams TEs coach Wes Phillips) have been working on the last few weeks in his improvement, he’s somebody that comes to mind.” - per LA Rams HC Sean McVay
Per Bret Stuter from Ramblin Fan: "You know that you’ve drafted a special type of athlete when the first challenge to the start of the rookie’s NFL career is correctly categorizing him in terms of what role he will play for the team. That’s the case for the LA Rams new rookie tight end or wide receiver Jacob Harris. You see, he is 6-foot-5, boasts a 6-foot-9.25 inch wingspan, and currently weighs 211 pounds, which places him firmly in the ‘tweener’ group for the Rams offensive designation."
Jacob Harris seems to rival the former NFL great WR Calvin Johnson in size, weight, and speed. But the LA Rams are not exactly known for rushing their offensive rookies onto the field.
