His postgame comments were terrible and his weaknesses have actually hurt the team this season....and frankly, they were starting to show early LAST season.
You don't micromanage a quarterback, you DEVELOP a quarterback. In my opinion, what was helping Goff adjust to the NFL in the beginning hit a point where it was actually hurting him. It's like McVay taught him to ride a bike but continues to hold onto the bike while he's riding it. You see this manifest in his poor clock management and the endless burning of timeouts. Classic micromanager, high performing control freak personality that has gotten out of control.
And make no mistake, it's now out of control. His closest friends and coaches are using it against him. Two losses to Shanny's 9ers who had none of their best players. LaFleur's Packers. One of the pre-game shows interviewed Shanahan who related a story about how amped up he gets and how he was throwing up at one point...Shanahan had to tell him to 'chill out.'
Another 'tell' is his post game interviews....the robotic, predetermined, repetitive comments (it's NOT like other coach speak) and his ability to reel off plays and players from 10 years ago.
Here is what I see: he is starting to tread into territory where he 'experiments' by changing players, schemes, etc. on a regular basis. Dangerous, bad territory for players...they begin wondering how secure they are....and they play like it. If there was any doubt on Jared, why extend him? Look no further than this offense.....go back and watch the 2018 season compared to this season. It looks like a completely different offense. Goff had a great SB season, why change it? Where is the TE's in this offense after Higbee went nuts toward the end of last season? Has McVay ever heard of a 10-12 yard out pattern?
He has hurt Goff the past two seasons. Goff is a good, top 10-12 QB....he's Matt Ryan. Goff would be a perennial Pro Bowler under Kyle Shanahan. Under McVay he is a robotic extension of a coach that is young, impatient and a classic micromanager....right down to every single play during a game.
Watching the post game presser, it was obvious that Jared is now getting 'Gurleyed'.... McVay is laying the path. Plugging Wolford in, or another QB won't solve this problem. Frankly, if Brees retires, Goff should ask for a trade to NO and Payton. He'd flourish under Shanahan. I'm pretty sure Frank Reich would turn him into a special player in Indy. I think Nagy would turn him into a star in Chicago.
McVay is a good, innovative coach. But he is not 'mature' yet....and I'm not sure you can change that personality. His comments last night were bad....just bad. His QB played with pins in his throwing hand and played great. Staley carried the team this season. Teams are on to McVay's 'scheme'.....frankly, FANS are onto McVay's scheme...... you can call out the play from your couch. He is running a passing offense with no TE's and three Ricky Proehl's at wide receiver. It isn't going to work.....
I sense danger. Danger of running Akers into the ground next season. Kupp's injuried. Alienating a QB that has followed all of your directions. Continually ignoring the limitations of the offensive line, from talent to play calling.
I like McVay. I like his fire. He is innovative. However, like all of us, he has major weaknesses.... and they are showing and dramatically impacting the entire team, but especially the offense and Goff.
Be careful what you wish for at QB... we have a talented one. If you launch him, you better hope it's for a superstar with a sharp learning curve. McVay needs to take a good, very long look in the mirror. His friends and other coaches are on to him.
I've been wondering about a lot of the same things lately. I've been asking, why can't he take the qb he has and develop around him, instead demanding a different guy.
His postgame this time was kind of nuts, and that's whether or not he said "right now."
