I don't think the decision is all that excruciating. And this is from someone who likes JJ (actually I can't imagine any Rams fan not liking him).
But as good as he is, he's not Donald/Ramsey level. They drafted two safeties this year, and both of them showed well as rookies. They have a long record of finding DBs without spending high picks (Ramsey of course being an exception).
Good teams always have more good players than they can keep.
He called the plays on the D but Staley has also said Fuller has shown the ability to do that.
I think they anticipated letting him go a long time ago.
And of course they can still surprise us and cut or trade someone we don't expect them to and use the money for Johnson. But I don't expect that.
