The part that he was claiming is not objective is when people compare Goff to Rodgers, Wilson, and Mahomes. They say, "see these players also have bad games," but fail to acknowledge that the baseline for those QBs is simply much higher than for Goff.
At this point, we can objectively say that Goff is not on the level of the aforementioned QBs.
And I was pointing out that his stance was no better.
That's why I interjected the fact that virtually any good qb you can name had bad games in their 5th year.
That way I moved the ground to facts that are far less easy to dismiss--even the best qbs have had bad games in their 5th year.
That is a fact. Now what to make of it? Some will say that 2 bad games in his 5th year proves Goff is not better than average, some will say it means the issue is still very much open.
Both are just opinions at this point. For the record, I am on the side of those who believe that there is still a ways to go before we judge with any kind of certainty what level of qb he is.
....
His point on baseline was very good. It's agreed that even the best QBs have bad games.
But the baseline on the bad games for the best QBs is much lower. Agree or disagree?
And none-elite QBs have awesome games. But the baseline on good games for this caliber of QB is much lower. Agreed?
No his point on the "baseline" assumed knowledge of more years under good circumstances.
So what is Goff's "baseline"? Rookie year after an Air Raid offense (Mahomes did not start as a rookie cause he too was from an Air Raid offense back when incorporating AR qbs in the NFL was still much riskier). Then a full season with a bad OL. Then a season with one good quarter and then one subpar quarter because of 2 games.
Can you pretend that you objectively "know" Goff's baseline at this point? I submit that it would
not be objective if you said you did.
Besides, as is usually the case with this kind of discussion, the dismissive group keeps comparing Goff to elite qbs. A waste of time--since no one is saying he IS elite, so what's the point? (Elite is Brady, Marino, Montana, probably Wilson--a rare category).
