I am all in with the 'future is now' concept. And in consideration of that, it's clear that Reynolds and Everett can help the team win now where a 2022 draft pick can't.
If the idea is to win the Super Bowl (as it should be every year) why give up guys who might help get you there? Especially when Reynolds and Everett are likely to get you a comp pick after the season, possibly replacing the draft capital you gave up for the edge?
Hypothetically, suppose the Rams gave up a 4th in 2022 for the edge and then got a 4th round comp pick for Reynolds when he left in FA. Isn't that better than trading Reynolds today? The Rams essentially would have Reynolds for another 13 games plus playoffs and all it would cost them for the edge is to drop from the 32nd pick in the 4th round to the 35th pick in the 4th round.
And sure, if the Rams offered a pick in trade for an edge and the other team said "Nope. We want Reynolds." then I would trade Reynolds. So I guess my actual answer to you poll is 'only if the other team won't take a pick or 2'
Since we’re just ‘spitballin’ here, how about this?
What if the acquired edge was of the same caliber as Reynolds or Everett and had a helluva year when given the chance to start here rather than be buried on the bench on his current team? That’s also 13 games of tremendous value, too. In fact, I submit that he would then be more valuable to our playoff chances than either of the traded Ram players.
Moreover, couldn’t he also yield a future comp pick back to us just as Everett or Reynolds might? OR, if he really has a nice year, wouldn’t he be a more attractive extension prospect than either of the 2 current Ram players? OR, what if he wasn’t in his final contract year and could remain for another year or two, giving Snead more time to load up on our edge depth?
We could go round and round on this interesting topic, but I keep coming back to the same thought. The future is now and a decent edge could be just enough to put the Rams in deep playoff contention. Gotta do this if Snead can find a good trade partner.
Unless Snead/McVay still think that our quality starting edge opposite Floyd is already on the roster? I have serious doubts that they feel that way when speaking privately.
