Well, in the scenario I suggested the player in question would be a FA after this season. If his current team didn't resign him then at best his current team would get a comp pick in 2022. If the Rams offer a better pick than the team would get otherwise then perhaps they pull the trigger. (Like offer a 2022 4th for a guy that might only get a 6th round comp pick in 2022.).
