While growing up with football in the 1960s, it became a part of me. Beginning in the early 1980s, however, I started questioning if it makes sense to follow a brutal sport that is played by spoiled, and in many cases ignorant, rich people. I started becoming more of an NBA fan, which was easy as a Lakers fan during that period. The arrival of Eric Dickerson drew me back into following the NFL. He is exactly the type of player that represents what is best about the game of football. The worst thing about football is when great athletes train themselves to be the kind of player that Dickerson was and then have it all go up in smoke after a dirty hit takes out their knee or gives them one too many concussions. With the head injury issues coming to light, I think it will be a good thing if football eventually fades away.
