Yeah, I totally see what you mean. With my son (11) he has played in a well-organized youth flag football league the past year and really likes it. He has asked, "what if I wanted to play tackle football?" And I've said, "If your interest is still really strong when you get to high school we'll talk about it then." I have never liked the idea of youth tackle football and for many years have thought it's totally unnecessary and dangerous. Coaching and watching flag football the kids learn 85% of what they would need to know down the line. But yeah, I'd probably be thrilled if he went toward basketball, lacrosse, track & field, etc. in high school instead.
