is that his play declined once the oline started struggling in pass protection
that’s something you are in tune with when it comes to Goff but here you focus on Jimmy G
he was 18 of 21 and on his way to MVP prior to the 49ers going into pass mode there final 3 series and getting away from their play action game
i’m just surprised you have yet to comment on it
First, I am firmly in the camp that says Goff is better than Garagepolo. I am not very likely to yield on that.
And my issue with the Rams wasn't pressures. That's only part of it.
So it's actually inaccurate to say my issue is qb pressures. As I said that is only PART of it. My issue is overall OL stability. A subpar or heavily injured OL is a problem from the start of the game to the end. It's a problem BEFORE the game. Playcalling changes, the qb knows they do not have a stable platform before the 1st snap, and so on. Lots and lots of consequences.
With Jimmy G, you are just talking about the 4th quarter--not a clear and distinct disadvantage going into the game. With their run game, with their FB and TEs, the 49ers could usually shield Jimmy G and they could enter games confident that the OL situation would not be a disasadvantage from snap 1. Rams never had that option in any games against top defenses. So Goff played under much more unstable conditions.
But you brought up pressures so let's look at pressures. In this case I will look at the relatively more stable OL the Rams had in the 2nd half of 2019 (in spite of the OL starting 3 injury replacements).
Comparing the Rams against the SF D in December to the 49ers in the superbowl.
In the December SF game, Goff was pressured 12 times against what we all agree is a very strong D front.
His numbers:
27 of 43, 323 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, & a qb rating of 85.7. And no running game.
In the 4th quarter, with the game on the line, coming from behind, he was 4 of 6 for 38 yards.
In the superbowl, JImmy G was pressured 8 times.
His numbers:
20 of 31, 219 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, & a qb rating of 69.2.In the 4th quarter, with the game on the line, he was 3 of 11 for 36 yards & 1 INT.
As I would expect, Goff was much better under roughly similar circumstances, and that was while facing more pressures.
Jimmy G is better shielded from bad game conditions that Goff was overall, yet in roughly similar circumstances Goff came though and Jimmy G did not.
