So lets go back in time and play a few games a year in LA between 1995 and 2015. How would that have helped the Rams build a fan base for 2016 thru 2019? To my way of thinking bringing the Bears, Packers, Chiefs, etc. to LA on a regular basis would have built their fan bases up to the detriment of the Rams. Am I missing something?
Well, I agree...bringing the Bears, Packers, and Chiefs to LA on a regular basis likely would've have built up their respective fan bases (to the detriment of the Rams).
But I suspect that, had the league brought
the Rams to LA for a couple of games during that time, it might have encouraged some legacy of fandom. I didn't have any kids at the time, but if I did...I'd certainly have loved the opportunity to take them to see the GSOT. Who wouldn't, right?
Several years later, I got that opportunity when my wife, daughter, and I ventured down to San Diego in 2014 to watch the Rams play the Chargers. I wasn't alone. There were about 25,000 other Rams fans (many of whom brought their kids too) overruning Charger fan. It was the first time my daughter had ever been to an NFL game. It wouldn't be her last as we've had a chance to see them play at the Coliseum a few times the past 3 years. And yeah...she's a Rams fan.
