No one said anything is "wrong" with it, by itself. You're missing the point.
The argument is this. The league is a balance of competing interests. It just is. That IS what it is. League office, players association. So what the owners want is irrelevant--it's what they can get from players. And players are never going to concede an 18-game regular season. It damages their interests to do that--it hurts careers and literally wears players down. (The league admitted as much when it tried to float the "18 game schedule with starters playing only 16" balloon.)
It is never just what the owners want. I watch football to watch the players. The league is nothing without the players. The players have to agree to something like the 18 game schedule, and...they won't.
