I agree. Tap other revenue growth sources instead of relying on an archaic source (preseason) that provides far less value to the fan than ever before.
I would not get rid of preseason but I would go to two games with each team also having 2-4 days of joint practices with other team(s). Also have a controlled intrasquad scrimmage at each home stadium too that is priced modestly and allows some fans extras (for a cost) like field access or postgame autograph signings, etc. They can get creative. It's should not be that hard. To me charging more than $25 for a preseason game where no starters play is absurd.

Plus, add a 2nd bye and increase roster size to 60, or so. Oh, and everybody is active on game day.
To lay the groundwork for this point...the league is a partnership between the players' association and the league office, which represents the owners and does the work for them getting network contracts and thereby guaranteeing that every team is in the black before they put the first logo on the first helmet.
The owners would want an 18 game schedule because it increases their overall revenue.
Players are against it because it increases the chances of injury and other things that wear out a player's career.
Looked at objectively, the owners don't need more revenue, they;re thriving. Players however need good working conditions and that includes keeping the number of games at 16.
The balance favors the players, who have the better cause.
Personally? I care about player welfare because I watch the game to see the players play. I could care less if owners get EVEN MORE revenue.

In the interests of player safety, should we go back to a 14 game schedule? Or maybe 12?
With the corresponding cap and player salary reductions?
And reduced fan involvement?

The 18 game schedule is coming just as sure as Gawd made green apples. It’s merely a question of when.
