The writing is on the wall. Fewer people attend them. Almost nobody cares. The games are as exciting as bowling. There was a time when you'd see starters play in the SECOND half of games. Now, we are seeing they do not need to play at all. I'm pretty certain team depth can be found during scrimmages in camp. Just HOW a true evaluation is made anyway, is beyond me. It's games with zero game plans and players playing vs other players trying to figure out the NFL.
It's simply not worth it anymore.
If you rid yourself of the idea that P-S games are supposed to feature starters for the benefit of ticket sales, then, they are actually very useful.
The Rams use them to coach up and assess rookies and 2nd year players. The benefits of that ought to be obvious.
You just have to get over the idea that a completely inexperienced OL of 5 non-starters can ever possibly look good, and see that the players in the middle of that are gaining invaluable coaching and experience.
So maybe re-package them as glorified scrimmages with promotional add-ons to bring people in
("this Saturday, watch the Rams 2s scrimmage the Dallas 2s, kids free and every kid gets a balloon!" )You cut out P-s games altogether and the new players get about half the coaching they need.
