"I’m a Great Believer in Luck. The Harder I Work, the More Luck I Have."

Often attribute to T Jefferson, though much debate over it.

But the point here is McVay and Snead worked harder and smarter than previous Rams braintrusts. The good luck they "fell into" is well deserved.

I think you are getting a LITTLE BIT on the "mentioning luck means dismissing something" side here. I warned folks about that. cool smiley I count it as a plus that on top of everything else, McV has good luck too.

I agreed with Sun's entire post. So no reminders about McV's top qualities needed. And plus I don't think Snead and McV worked harder than anyone else btw, I think they're just better at what they do so the work paid off more.

There are people who work hard and have BAD luck. So I don't buy the "work harder equals luckier" mantra. I like people who are GOOD, AND work hard, AND are lucky.

....

....

I know plenty of people who have had bad luck but were determined and kept working hard and became successful.

Sure, some of them were just so unlucky that they weren't able to overcome it despite being smart, working hard and being determined, but hard work and determination does count for a lot.

I don't use being unlucky as a blanket crutch for failure. But now we are getting into a philosophical discussion. I'm not ready to start quoting Hayek.

Everyone knows those stories and they of course apply to a lot of ourselves too.

But it does not always work that way. If it did, the universe would be a different place.

You are never going to get anyone to ever say hard work DOES NOT pay off. It's sort of a universal go-to mantra. Like as if McV is the only coach who ever worked hard.

And then there';s the opposite,. which is to act like people hit by bad luck are using excuses or crutches. It too is another fortune cookie line that circulates widely. Shrug.

We benefitted from McVay inheriting most of a team, with a GM who knew that team already, and who could hire top coaches like Kromer who will not be going anywhere. His hard work did not do that. It's not a crutch to say it. Mantras aside, that's just honest realistic analysis to point it out.

We know he would have suceeded eventually but if you look throughout all NFL history, rarely if ever does a team have an overnight turnaround unless it inherited a lot of playoff caliber talent.

And WE as Rams fans are lucky it worked out that way. (And we didn't have to do anything, just enjoy the games.)

...

...

Oftentimes when you’re smarter than another hard working person, you make better decisions, and you appear luckier to the casual observer.

Well as a smart hard working person, I know luck when I see it. cool smiley

You can miss it, or take advantage of it, or seize it and run with it, or fritter it. But luck is luck. I don't believe in the myth of the utterly self-made person--we all belong to worlds that shape up and give us chances or not. Bezos the billionaire for example got his start up money interest free from his parents, who were in a position to do that for him. In contrast black veterans of WW2 were often denied GI benefits...[www.history.com] of course some were successful anyway, but that's a harder path. Part of what made Bezos what he is was starting out with an advantage. That's all real and it;s part of everything everyone does. I know when I have benefitted from just sheer chance or from advantages I did not really make myself...though I didn't hesitate to seize them.
