They definitely get paid, don’t they?

To be fair, RW is a helluva QB. I’d rather he be my QB than Aaron Rodgers, and on multiple levels, at that. Yeah, I said that. So, the Seahawks had to find the money and pay the man.

Now, about the financial impact for the Seahawks?

It’s gonna restrict their ability to sign FA’s and keep some of their own. A QB, or any player that consumes over 18% of the total cap will inevitably do that. 2nd contract, 3rd contract, what’s the difference? The result is the same with regard to their remaining personnel decisions. They will find themselves very hard pressed to retain even many of their top players henceforth. But they will have the most important piece for the next 5 years.

Rams will be in a similar situation soon, themselves. Goff is gonna get paid, too. And if his career trajectory continues to ascend as many of us expect, then he will be getting a top salary, also. Sure, the cap will continue to rise (if TV revenues do, also), but still...

The one ray of sunshine is that the Rams seem capable of the two things that will lessen the negative impact. They seem to draft well which will keep the pipeline full of less expensive players in their respective first 4 years. And the Ram coaches seem to be adept at bringing the younger players more quickly up to speed. Both Snead and McVay are worth their weight in gold to the Rams. Surely Stan Kroenke knows this and will “take care” of both of them.
