I just dont think it was overpaying. He is good, not great, and was paid accordingly given what the 2019 and 2020 caps will be. Continuity matters and a good OL is typically greater than the sum of its parts.
Without resigning him the Rams could have been looking at losing possibly as many as four of their starters in the offseason. No one knows what Sullivan and Whitworth will do. And while Saffold talks about wanting to stay and not go for top dollar you just never know. Havenstein is hardly a cornerstone piece of the team but after developing consistently for 3 years he was worth retaining for 2-3 more years. It gives the Rams the flexibility to develop Noteboom as either their LG or LT of the future. Allen is still TBD. Perhaps Blythe slides to center in a year and Noteboom starts at RG. Who knows.
My guess is Whitworth comes back for 2019, Sullivan does not, and they extend Saffold in a deal that keeps him in LA two more years. Noteboom is at minimum their 6th man in 2019 and they probably draft another OL with one of their 3rd round picks.
