I just watched the condensed version and I give Goff a B grading too. He had some really nice intermediate passes right on the money as well as a couple that could've been picked off. He missed a few easy throws too when he really wasn't harassed. I discount the errant throws under duress. There was a broken play in the 4th quarter? where he was outside the pocket and instead of throwing it out of bounds he tried to run and there was a 5 yard loss. I don't think he ever looked rattled though. Overall, he played very solid and I think a B grade is a fair assessment.
Hey, I'm happy. The Rams are 8-0!
You know how I take that? Because I had pretty much the same assessment though I do count the errant throws under duress because that's part of how you evaluate a qb's day.
I take that this way. (1) they need better protection and he needs to get used to less stellar protection, both at once. I think both things happen. Growing pains. AND (2) he's had better days and will have better days, though this was far from bad, AND (3) he worked through it and settled in and was a big part of why they won.
I am not the type who ever goes, they won so it can only be all praise and celebration. (Though if someone IS all praise and celebration, that's just them just like this is just me, there's no "war" there. Let a thousand flowers bloom.
). My tendency is, I can see things to celebrate in losses,
and I can see things to grade in a strict way in wins, and I really do do both. The celebrating and the assessing can both happen at once, neither one contradicts the other.
So. He had a grade B day, agreed, and that's his 3rd since Denver. As slumps go though this is a pretty high level one. I hope all his slumps are this "bad."
It's just growing pains for what may be one day seen as the Rams best qb since....I don't go back that far. Gabriel?
Yeah maybe better than Warner some day, he just needs seasoning IMO. By the time Kurt was a starter in 99 he had been in NFL Europe, the arena league, through 3 training camps (GB once, St. L twice), had been a grad coaching assistant, and was 28 years old. I just think Goff needs more seasoning and then maybe he will have a lot of what Kurt had plus he already has artistic arm talent no other Rams qb had (and I don't just mean a strong arm).
And he uses his powers for good. Not evil. So there's that too.
