Nice post, RFL. IMO the entire post is spot on.
One possible reason for Goff not getting the praise other QBs get: lots of people tagged Goff as a bust that first year and I think having that in their subconscious somewhere keeps them from objectively evaluating him now. As if Goff having a crappy first season is somehow averaged into his performance this year (and last year, too, for that matter).
No person is more of a longterm Goff advocate then I am. I was saying he had defining unique arm talent and the capacity for wow passes in August 2016. I defended him during the 2016 season and during the summer 2017 "interception-gate" thing. I was saying last September that he was a franchise qb with a high ceiling and that all he needed was seasoning and experience.
I say all that because I just have rock solid credentials when it comes to being on Goff's side.
I've even said that the reason he doesn't get national attention the way Rams fans would like is because his best traits are subtle. They are not dramatic, the way a 2017 Wentz highlight vid would be. Or a 2018 Mahomes highlight vid.
AND.
I am also a realist.
He faltered a bit last year and he has for a few games now, too. It's just that it's a very good but young qb faltering, not a probationary qb in a tailspin.
He WAS shakey for the first half. That's fine with me because he bounced back. It's still an upward trajectory.
Defenses are throwing things at him now schematically and he does not adjust to that as quickly as he will when he is a more seasoned player. That's been true since the Denver game.
As for the nationals...what do they know? They saw the Atlanta game last year, and of course as you said there's the "he's a bust" stuff from 2016. And none of them watch all 32 teams the way we watch the Rams.
In terms of getting praise for the GB game---yes Goff came through but the hero of that game is Gurley .
Again, am I a longterm, never once faltered Goff advocate. And my attitude toward all this stuff about him getting recognition is, just be patient. That will come. Why go through unnecessary frustration because it's not coming soon enough to suit us? Naw...it will come.
