It;s different from that. The new CBA allows 1st round picks the right to re-negotiate their rookie deals after year 3.
Several have done it already (including Frederick. Kuechly, and Watt) and in every case they not only got the new deal, they became--in the year they signed anyway--the highest paid player at their position.
All Donald did was exercise that right.
Donald's problem is his category/position. According to the Rams they intend to pay him not as a DT and according to that market, but as the best defender in the league. (Paradoxically Mack is doing the same). That's more money than most deals, with the exception of the top qbs.
