Neither JJ, TruJ, or Watkins are on Donald's level. Donald is truly elite. Those guys are not. There were issues with all of them. They made a mistake by keeping TruJ over JJ, but TruJ isn't near to being elite. JJ is a better player but there is risks associated with him that would make you hesitant to give him elite money. Watkins still has his injury questions and for whatever reasons he didn't play for the Rams like someone worthy of getting elite money.
So Donald will really be the first true test of whether the Rams are willing to pay for truly elite players. We'll see what happens.
Donald is ultra elite and the other three aren't on his level. I can agree with that.
But I don't see this as the first true test because the other three, while maybe not elite, were well above average players that were going to require salaries significantly above $10M.
If you're only going to go by how they handle a player on Donald's level, you're not going to have many opportunities to ascertain their philosophy on how they handle the solidly above average to elite category. So IMO it's way too narrow to only limit the test to an AD type.
So far they are 0 for 3. Contrast that with the fact that they've extended several players in the average/$10M range and a pattern appears to be emerging.
I'm glad they didn't pay Watkins or TruJ the money they ended up getting on the open market. I think that's smart...they didn't think they were worth it and I agree. JJ is a different case. They had only one tag and they used it on TruJ. Once they did that, JJ was gone because they couldn't afford 2 CB's getting franchise level dollars. The mistake was picking TruJ over JJ...who's a better player. JJ shouldn't even be in this discussion because he wasn't in the same situation as Watkins and TruJ.
