I’d like to think that AD could see the bigger picture beyond just the dollars.
If he can’t, so be it.
I’m on record as recommending $110 million over 5 years, $70 million guaranteed. No opt out type crap. That should be enough to satisfy all of AD’s needs financially as well as giving him the “respect” some feel he craves.
If that’s not enough for him then I would recommend that the Rams play hardball and give him (and his pos agent) a harsh lesson in the realities of leverage when negotiating.
The tail should never wag the dog, IOW.
I think $110M / 5 years, $70M guaranteed is probably in the ball park that would get it done. But in reading the tea leaves, I don't think the Rams are offering anything in that vicinity.
So far we've heard the offer on the table be described as "competitive." That's a very telling buzzword in the contract law field. It means one among several at the top. That word is not used when you are the top. And Demoff's use of the phrase "among the highest paid defenders" aligns with the view that they are not offering to make him the highest paid defender in the $20M+ range.
Based on these two descriptions of the offer, my bet is that they are offering somewhere between $18-$19M per year. That would be "competitive" and "among the highest paid defenders" but lower than Miller's defense player leading $19.016M.
If my reading of the tea leaves is correct, I think his agent is playing this right.
