Rumor: Rams willing to make Aaron Donald highest paid defender, but he wants QB money
by Bob Garcia IVJune 25, 2018.
Edited. I fine-tuned this.
First, there are NO sources saying what Donald is asking for. That is because no one knows. VB is only claiming that some people in the NFL think that. He's not claiming that anyone knows that since in fact no one DOES know what is being offered or asked for.
Second, qb money in 2018 is 28 M dollars and the idea that AD would be asking for that much is preposterous. This is based on 2nd contracts for starters, since 3rd and 4th contracts are more all over the map. The increases in 2nd contracts are steady year by year. And in 2017, Carr got 25 M; in 2018, Cousins got 28 M . THAT is QUARTERBACK MONEY.
The best speculation from credible sources is putting Donald's value somewhere around 20 to 24 M. Those amounts stopped being "qb money" after 2016.
And the line has already been crossed. When Suh signed for 19 M a year in 2015, that was already more that most qbs at that point. In 2015, for example, Dalton signed for 16 M.
Short version: people don't know and VB never claimed they did know. It's all just speculation at this point.

You keep acting like
no one knows what the offers or demands are, but it seems a bit naive to think that is actually the case.... Do you really think there aren't plenty of people who know exactly what the offer and demand is???
If this story is true and AD and his agent think he is getting QB money, he's out of his mind..... If that's the case, then the Rams can and should just pull the offer after a certain date and just play the franchise tag game....we get AD for the next three years for about $35-40 mil with no guarantee and let him walk when he is 30 years old.
I don't mind AD being paid like the best defensive player, but if he's trying to wreck a salary cap and break the bank with $24m + .....he's as greedy as it gets and the Rams would be stupid to pay him QB money considering the other players we have to try to keep around.
All that has to happen is that the negotiating parties don't leak the amounts. To do that they only have to agree that they want things to be behind closed doors and not in public. Not sure what's naive about recognizing that. I think it's far-fetched to act like every time some reporter speculates, that that's a fact. It's like last year's "opt out" rumor, which was based on nothing and then disappeared.
There's no evidence anywhere of any kind that AD is asking for something in the high 20s. I mean go ahead and worry about that if you want. Your prerogative. But it;s not real.
In fact what you're not getting here is that the people who are speculating about "qb money" actually don't get what qb money IS. They think 20-24 M is qb money. That's what's happening here.
Oh and up to 24 M is not going to wreck a cap. That's actually easy enough to determine by playing around with the numbers.
