1. I think Snead has done a good job overall.
2. I don't view Les Snead as a drafting genius.
3. I do view Les Snead as a good evaluator of pro personnel.
I think Max's analysis is really all I'm pointing out. When evaluating how well you have don't drafting, you cannot ignore where you are drafting in the first round because placement matters. And yes, Snead has been good in the teens. I just wish he would have stayed put in the middle and drafted my guy Deandre Hopkins! That year I was in the Hopkins/Ogletree corner.
Snead does seem to hit on enough late picks to help compensate for his second round, fourth round, fifth round short comings. I don't know what it's with him
on round two.
1. Virtually everyone thinks Snead has done a good job overall. That's the majority view I think.
2. I don't think anyone sees him as a drafting genius. That's kind of a straw man.
3. I think #3 is also the consensus view.
I think that the "look at the top of the draft" thing is just partial. You cannot ignore the offensive rookie of the year/player of the year factor, the defensive rookie of the year/player of the year factor, and the pro bowl qb in his 2nd year factor. That's a very rare accomplishment, to do all 3 things.
I don't think the "2nd round" issue is real...for this reason: 2012 was the GM's first year and since then, with 3 second round picks so far we know he has hit on Joyner and Hav. We don't yet know about Everett. I say that improvement with experience counts too. GMs improve with experience. Has Snead improved with experience and therefore is he better in the 2nd round since 2012? I personally think he has, though objectively it's too soon to say. Still I think it's tipping that way. In terms of what counts, so does things like having an unusually good 3rd round record. In terms of an overall record yes placement counts. That is, in doing an overall assessment of Snead, you have to count Robinson plus the fact that Tavon was not a receiver but a (albeit productive) role player. All of that counts IMO.
So the short version is, we agree on your point #1, where you said that Snead has done a good job overall.
